Hiding the Word in Your Heart
Scripture
Psalm 119:11
Your word I have hidden in my heart, That I might not sin against You.
Reflection
When we were young children, our mothers nurtured us in the Word of God. She would often read and explain a scripture and pray with us early in the morning as we ate breakfast. Because we were so young, that time in the Word and prayer became something we looked forward to and over time she would do the same at night before we went to bed. Those precious times instilled in us a love for God and His Word created a desire to talk with Him throughout the day in prayer. This verse was one of the first that I can recall my mother teaching me. She taught that hiding the Word of God meant treating the Word as God’s treasure to me and by reading it every day I was making a deposit in my heart that would guide and keep me in His Will through the day and beyond. She taught me that memorizing the Word and meditating upon it would enable the Holy Spirit to activate it in my character and that the Word would wash me like a bath and keep me from sinning against God. She also emphasized that I needed to hear the Word through sound preaching and teaching to build my faith.
All of these years later, I can attest that depositing God’s Word will transform your mind, your heart and your soul and increase your desire to please and serve Him.
Prayer
Oh God, thank you for your wonderful, powerful and Life-changing Word. I desire to increase the time I spend in your Word so that my faith grows stronger and that I might not sin against Thee. In Jesus’ Name I pray — Amen.
